VACT wraps 10th anniversary celebrations with all-star performances
CHOP SUEY SPECIAL #10: Serving Up A Decade Of Performances
Saturday January 23, 2010
VANCOUVER, BC (January 4, 2010) – The Vancouver Asian Canadian Theatre
(VACT) wraps its year-long 10th anniversary celebrations with a special
fundraising event featuring an evening smorgasbord of all-star performances
highlighting some of its most successful productions over the past 10
years. This 2-hour show titled CHOP SUEY SPECIAL #10: Serving Up A Decade
of Performances on Saturday January 23, 7:30 PM, at the Norman Rothstein
Theatre hosted by comedian Tom Chin and actress Benita Ha. VACT does not
receive any form of sustaining funding grants and proceeds from this
fundraising event will go towards continuing 10-plus years of commitment to
developing Asian Canadian stage talent and new productions. Tickets are
available now online (www.vact.ca) and at the door.
What’s on the CHOP SUEY SPECIAL #10 menu? The show opens with an
appetizer line-up of Asian sketch comedy routines by emerging troupes, the
DARIN’ JOES and LAUGHING MAKE MIND DAMAGE. These 2 new groups have been
featured in VACT’s annual comedy shows and have been performing around
town over the past couple of years. VACT has had a long tradition of
developing and nurturing sketch comedy groups, such as HOT SAUCE POSSE and
ASSAULTED FISH.
Following sketch comedy will be romantic comedy. The main entrée for this
fundraiser is an all-star reunion of various cast members of VACT’s
most profitable production, SEX IN VANCOUVER. Between 2003 and 2006, fans
have been laughing, lusting, crying and cheering for this unique episodic
series of four plays about 4 hot Asian Canadian girlfriends and the
hopeless men in their lives. A special condensed version of the entire
series has been written and this hilarious production can indeed be billed
as “The Best of Sex In Vancouver.”
And dessert for everyone in the audience will be a fun Sing-A-Long to
FLOWER DRUM SONG with the entire all-Asian cast of VACT’s recent summer
hit (and most successful production to-date) of the hit Rodgers and
Hammerstein’s Broadway musical. Preceding this will be a 17-minute film
produced by VAFF Productions, titled FLOWER, DRUM AND SONGS, documenting
the VACT rehearsals and opening night performance at the Waterfront Theatre
of the musical.
“I’m so proud of what we’ve all accomplished over the past 10
years and this Fundraiser is really going to show, and prove, what
fantastic talented people we have in the local Asian Canadian
community,” says Joyce Lam, VACT president and artistic director.
“This is a one-time-only show and people shouldn’t miss it. And for
those who came to previous shows over the past 10 years, this will
definitely be a great fun trip down memory lane.”
